Do this Before you Start Painting! March 3rd, 2010

Do_This_Before_You_Start_PaintingPreparation Comes First

1. Protect anything you do not want to get covered in paint or dust

2. If possible, move everything out of the room

3. However, this may be hard for larger furniture and so the best way is to move everything into the centre of the room and then cover it with a clear plastic dust sheet

4. Remove all pictures, ornaments and any light shades in the room.  If the light shades have special fixings, tape them on to the back of the item to avoid losing them!

5. Once everything has been moved in to the middle of the room, you can use clean dust sheets around the edges.  This will ensure a non-slippery floor when using steps and/or ladders and will also catch dust and falling paint

6. Loosen light switches and/or electrical sockets and protect them with masking tape.  This will prevent paint from falling on to them

7. If you do not want to loosen the sockets and switches simply cover them with the masking tape

8. To protect the carpet, use two inches of masking tape around the edges

9. Starting from the corner, pull about a metre of tape from the roll and apply the tape to the carpet with around 10mm overlapping on to the skirting

10. Using a scraper push the overlapped tape down between the carpet and the skirting

11. Doing this will allow full access to the skirting and avoid any unpainted lines at the bottom
